U.S. Envoy Criticizes Israel Over Stalled Gaza Ceasefire Talks
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

DayofPal– In a rare and pointed critique, U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff has accused Israel of deliberately prolonging the war in Gaza, thereby obstructing efforts to secure the release of Israeli prisoners held by Gaza resistance.

Speaking during a closed-door meeting with the families of the captives, Witkoff expressed Washington’s growing frustration with Israel’s refusal to commit to a ceasefire.

“We want to bring your loved ones home,” he reportedly said, “but Israel is not ready to end the war. They are prolonging it, even though we don’t see a path forward without a deal.”

The envoy emphasized that a narrow diplomatic window remains open and called on all parties to seize the moment. “We are putting pressure on all the mediators and doing everything possible to return the kidnapped,” he told the families.

The remarks have intensified a chorus of criticism inside Israel, where the families of prisoners have been staging mass protests.

Demonstrators in Tel Aviv and occupied Jerusalem have brandished signs reading, “First bring them back, then fight,” demanding the government agree to a ceasefire to secure the hostages’ release — even if only temporarily.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under increasing fire for repeatedly blocking international ceasefire proposals, with many accusing him of stalling to maintain his political grip amid a deepening crisis.

Multiple media reports have confirmed that Netanyahu has rejected or delayed deals backed by key international mediators.

Meanwhile, a senior Hamas official revealed to Al Jazeera that the movement is engaged in advanced, direct negotiations with the U.S. The talks, confirmed by Palestinian sources to Reuters, aim to end the assault on Gaza and ease the dire humanitarian conditions in the besieged enclave.

Yet, despite mounting international and domestic pressure, Netanyahu’s government remains defiant, refusing to commit to a lasting truce.

Witkoff’s unusually candid comments mark a shift in tone from Washington and hint at growing cracks in the diplomatic front.
