DaysofPal-The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has issued a stark warning about the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, which has been worsening over the past 18 months. The complete blockade imposed on the territory has left 2.2 million Palestinians grappling with dire shortages of food, clean water, and medical supplies, pushing the region to the brink of famine.
In a statement on Friday, the High Commissioner emphasized that the collapse of the ceasefire has further escalated Israeli attacks, compounding the suffering of an already vulnerable population.
Famine Looms as Aid Blockades Persist
Gaza’s food insecurity has reached alarming levels, with the blockade severely restricting the entry of essential supplies, including staples like flour, rice, and cooking oil. The lack of access to arable land and fishing waters—due to Israeli-enforced war and blockade—has crippled local food production, leaving families entirely dependent on humanitarian aid. However, the near-complete halt in aid deliveries over recent months has created a catastrophic gap, with many households now facing severe malnutrition.
According to recent reports, over 70% of Gaza’s population is currently food insecure, with children and the elderly particularly at risk. The UN has warned that without immediate intervention, widespread famine could become a reality within weeks. Hospitals are already reporting cases of severe malnutrition, while families are forced to survive on drastically reduced rations or go without food for days.
Escalating Israeli war exacerbates the crisis
The High Commissioner also noted that the Israeli genocidal war has intensified since the collapse of the ceasefire, further devastating infrastructure and civilian lives.
Homes, schools, and healthcare facilities have been destroyed, leaving thousands displaced and without access to basic services. The Israeli destruction of water and sanitation systems has compounded the crisis, leading to outbreaks of waterborne diseases and further straining limited resources.
In the West Bank, the situation is similarly dire, with escalating settler violence and Israeli occupation attacks displacing families and claiming Palestinian lives. The High Commissioner condemned these actions, emphasizing that the ongoing violence and forced displacement violate international law and are exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe across the occupied Palestinian territories.
Call for Immediate Action
The UN High Commissioner urged the international community to intervene urgently to prevent a full-blown famine in Gaza. This includes pressuring the Israeli occupation to lift the blockade, ensure the uninterrupted flow of humanitarian aid, and protect civilians from further harm. Without swift action, the people of Gaza face not only starvation but also the collapse of what little remains of their healthcare and social systems.
As the world watches, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to spiral out of control, underscoring the urgent need for global solidarity and accountability to avert a tragedy of immense proportions.
