OCHA: Gaza Home to Largest Group of Amputee Children in Modern History

DaysofPal- The Gaza Strip has become home to the largest group of amputee children ever recorded in modern history, according to a grim report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). The devastating toll of the ongoing Israeli blockade and war has left thousands of children permanently disabled, with limited access to medical care or rehabilitation services.

A Maimed Generation

Every day, an estimated 10 children lose one or both limbs due to relentless bombardments, according to UNRWA. Lisa Dutton, Director of the Funding and Partnerships Division at OCHA, highlighted during an International Council session that Gaza now holds the tragic distinction of having the highest number of amputees globally.

Dr. Munir Al-Kabeer, Director General of Health in Gaza, confirmed these findings, reporting over 4,700 amputation cases so far, including approximately 850 children.

Compounding the crisis is the Israeli occupation’s refusal to allow critical materials into Gaza, claiming they could be used for military purposes.

These restrictions severely hinder efforts to manufacture prosthetics and provide essential medical supplies, leaving countless victims without proper support.

Humanitarian Aid Falls Short

Despite international aid programs, such as those led by the Medical Aid Society, current assistance covers only 20% of the needs for amputee children during intermittent ceasefires. This shortfall leaves thousands struggling with inadequate resources for recovery and rehabilitation. Long-term treatment remains out of reach for many, particularly in northern Gaza, where healthcare infrastructure has collapsed under the weight of the siege.

Dr. Al-Borsh, another senior health official, revealed staggering figures: since October 7, 2023, more than 50,521 Palestinians have been killed, including 15,613 children—among them 872 infants under one year old. Shockingly, 247 newborns were born and died during the conflict. Over 113,000 others have been wounded, with 25,000 requiring long-term rehabilitation.

Health and Humanitarian Collapse

Conditions in Gaza continue to deteriorate, exacerbated by a comprehensive blockade and lack of basic medical facilities. The northern regions, in particular, face severe shortages, rendering hospitals unable to cope with the influx of casualties. Women in Gaza are also at heightened risk, with increased rates of miscarriages and maternal mortality due to the dire conditions.

A Call for Action

Dr. Al-Barsh emphasized that the scale of suffering in Gaza rivals that of major historical conflicts, impacting nearly 7% of the population either through death or injury. He urged the international community to intervene urgently, stressing that the people of Gaza cannot endure further neglect.

As the world grapples with this humanitarian catastrophe, the voices of Gaza’s children—many robbed of their limbs and futures—serve as a haunting reminder of the cost of silence and inaction.
Without immediate intervention, experts warn that the situation will spiral further into despair, perpetuating cycles of trauma and loss.
