DayofPal– In the wake of the October 7, 2023, Google rushed to meet demands from Israel’s military for access to its advanced artificial intelligence tools, according to internal documents obtained by The Washington Post.
Despite prior controversies over its involvement in Israel’s defense sector, Google employees worked to expand the availability of AI technology, competing with Amazon to maintain its role as a key contractor under the multibillion-dollar Nimbus cloud computing project.
The documents reveal that Israel’s Defense Ministry requested expanded access to Vertex, a Google service used to apply AI algorithms to data, and Google employees expedited the process to prevent Israel from turning to Amazon.
By November 2024, as Gaza lay in ruins from Israeli airstrikes, Israel’s military was still requesting access to Google’s Gemini AI technology to develop an AI assistant capable of processing documents and audio.
While Google has denied that the Nimbus contract directly supports military or intelligence operations, statements from Israeli officials, including those tied to combat applications, suggest otherwise.
For example, the director of Israel’s National Cyber Directorate highlighted the transformative role Nimbus technology played in combat scenarios.
Israel’s military, which has long leveraged AI for surveillance and targeting, reportedly used an internally developed AI tool called Habsora during the Gaza offensive. The tool, built on hundreds of algorithms, identified thousands of potential human and infrastructure targets.
However, concerns were raised about its accuracy and the overreliance on its recommendations, potentially compromising intelligence analysis quality.
Google’s involvement with Israel’s defense sector has sparked significant employee backlash, with protests highlighting concerns over the use of its technology in atrocities that harm Palestinians.
Despite pledges to uphold AI ethics and human rights standards, Google has faced criticism for its continued work under the Nimbus contract, which many fear could bolster Israeli military operations.
This partnership underscores a broader pattern of AI integration into war zones, raising critical questions about corporate responsibility and the ethical boundaries of Technology in warfare.
