DayofPal– The Euro-Med Monitor has denounced, in a new report, actions of masked gangs enabled by the Israeli occupation in the Gaza Strip, accusing Israel of fostering conditions that encourage violence and lawlessness, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
The Gaza Strip faces escalating chaos as Israel intensifies efforts to dismantle the Strip’s security and justice systems, further destabilizing the Strip under the pretense of public order disruption, the Monitor said.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has systematically targeted members of Gaza’s security forces, civil police, and aid coordination teams—both during their duties and within their homes or shelters, aiming at decimating Palestinian infrastructure, institutions, and social cohesion.
The disintegration of Gaza’s security system has created an alarming rise in organized armed groups. These masked gangs, permitted by Israeli forces to infiltrate areas under military control, engage in looting humanitarian aid and attacking civilians.
The Monitor revealed that these gangs and Israel behind them violate international law and undermine basic human rights. The resulting insecurity has pushed some families to resort to weapons for resolving disputes, sparking a wave of individual retaliation and further deepening societal rifts
The ongoing targeting of police officers, checkpoints, and judicial institutions by Israeli forces further cripples Gaza’s ability to maintain order. Fear of reprisals deters civilians from reporting crimes, while the absence of functioning justice mechanisms fuels vigilantism and chaos.
Euro-Med Monitor highlighted the deliberate bombing of police stations, judicial facilities, and local security personnel as evidence of a systematic effort to dismantle Gaza’s governance infrastructure. The destruction extends to Palestinian courts and prisons, where Israeli-backed groups allegedly exacerbate disorder to erode stability.
The humanitarian toll is profound. The dismantling of civil institutions aggravates the suffering of Gaza’s population, already enduring dire conditions under Israel’s 15-month-long campaign of destruction. The targeting of critical infrastructure ensures the persistence of insecurity, deepening the enclave’s humanitarian crisis.
Euro-Med Monitor called for urgent action to address the breakdown of law and order in Gaza. It emphasized the responsibility of local authorities, including Hamas and other Palestinian factions, to regulate security measures within legal frameworks that uphold justice and human dignity.
However, the organization stressed that the international community must exert greater pressure on Israel to cease its attacks on Gaza’s justice system and civil institutions.
The Monitor asserted that lasting justice and dignity for Palestinians can only be achieved by ending Israel’s systematic violations and the broader genocidal campaign against the people of Gaza. International intervention to halt these crimes is essential to resolving the humanitarian catastrophe in the enclave.
