DayofPal– The World Food Programme (WFP) has condemned a violent attack by Israeli forces on one of its marked convoys in Gaza on Sunday, describing it as a horrific incident.
In a statement shared on X, the WFP expressed decry and outrage over Israel’s deliberate targeting of its clearly marked vehicles, which endangered the lives of its staff and caused damage to its vehicles.
The attack comes amid a worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Just ten days earlier, the WFP reported widespread famine striking in the Gaza Strip, noting it had been able to secure only one-third of the food needed to support Palestinians in the worn-out-war enclave.
In a renewed call on X, the WFP urged for “safe and sustainable access for aid delivery and the restoration of order,” emphasizing that “a ceasefire is more urgent than ever.”
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been conducting genocidal campaign in Gaza, resulting in over 154,000 Palestinian casualties, including tens of thousands of children and women.
More than 11,000 Gazans remain missing, while the enclave faces devastating destruction, famine, and the deaths of dozens of children and elderly due to starvation. The situation is being regarded as one of the worst humanitarian crises in modern history.
The Israeli government has continued its military campaign for 15 month in a row despite international outcry, including two arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on November 21, 2024, against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The WFP and other humanitarian organizations have reiterated the urgent need for immediate intervention to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s population.
Commenting on the attack, the head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), said that in Gaza the Israeli military is not making a distinction for humanitarian workers
“Humanitarian workers, whoever they are, have been regularly a target,” Philippe Lazzarini said in a post on X. “This blatant disregard cannot be the new norm.”
Cindy McCain, the executive director of the WFP, said it was “completely unacceptable” that the Israeli military again hit a vehicle carrying humanitarians in Gaza
On December 3, 2024, Israeli air strikes had killed four humanitarian workers, three from World Central Kitchen and one from Save the Children.
More than 341 humanitarian workers have lost their lives to Israeli attacks since the beginning of the Israeli war on Gaza, according to Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
