DayofPal– Prisoners’ Affairs Authority and the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS) have warned of an imminent health catastrophe in the Israeli Negev prison, housing thousands of Palestinian detainees, due to the outbreak of scabies disease.
In a press release from two human rights organizations on Monday, it was revealed that the Palestinian prisoners are grappling with serious and complex health issues, exacerbated by the prison administration’s refusal to provide necessary medical care.
The statement highlighted a recent visit by Palestinian lawyers to 35 Palestinian prisoners in Negev prison between October 27 and 30.
Their accounts painted a harrowing picture of the conditions the prisoners endure, underscoring a chilling belief that the prison administration is intent on causing them harm that finally leads to their death by any means necessary.
The attorneys emphasized that Negev prison, long notorious for its history of sexual assaults, torture, and rampant disease—especially scabies—has recently seen an influx of ill prisoners with scabies and health issues, further highlighting its grim legacy.
The attorneys reported that out of the 35 prisoners they visited in Negev prison, 25 were suffering from scabies.
They underscored that this represents just a fraction of the hundreds of infected prisoners who endure relentless torture and systematic medical abuses, with the prison administration exploiting the disease as a means of torment.
The statement also revealed that the detainees’ testimonies were filled with disturbing details about their suffering from the illness without ever recieving any treatment from the Israeli prisons’ service.
They also highlighted the prison administration’s neglect in addressing the root causes of the disease’s persistent spread.
