Dozens of Hezbollah members were wounded after the pagers they use to communicate exploded on Tuesday.
“Tens of injuries have been taken to hospital after pagers exploded through the use of high technology,” Lebanon’s state news agency said.
Videos and photos on social media appeared to show wounded men sitting or lying on floors and others being rushed to hospitals. Unconfirmed CCTV footage showed blasts in shops.
A Hezbollah official, speaking to Reuters news agency on condition of anonymity, said the detonation of the pagers was the “biggest security breach” the group had been subjected to in nearly a year of war with Israel.
A few months ago, Hezbollah leadership ordered its fighters to stop using smartphones because Israel has the technology to infiltrate and penetrate those devices.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared plans to launch a massive attack in Lebanon.
Tension has been escalated on Lebanon-Israel borders since Israel launched its deadly war on Gaza last October.
