Palestinian journalist Mohammed Abu Shuqah was killed, alongside his father, in an Israeli airstrike targeting multiple homes in the Al-Bureij refugee camp, central Gaza on Tuesday early morning.
This latest massacre adds to the mounting toll of civilian casualties, with dozens of deaths and injuries reported, many of whom remain trapped under the rubble.
Abu Shuqah’s death brings the total number of journalists killed since the onset of Israel’s military assault on Gaza to 174.
According to local sources, Abu Shuqah and his father were among the dozens of victims in the Al-Bureij camp attack. Rescue teams continue to search through the debris, with many of the injured still buried beneath the destruction caused by the relentless airstrikes.
The killing of Abu Shuqah, a journalist who dedicated his life to documenting the realities of Gaza, follows the recent death of another journalist, Abdullah Shakshak, who was shot by an Israeli drone last Saturday in Rafah.
Shakshak had been targeted by an Israeli “quadcopter” drone while covering the ongoing Israeli attacks in Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip.
Media Under Siege
The systematic targeting of journalists in Gaza has drawn widespread condemnation from both Palestinian and international media organizations.
Despite repeated warnings from international bodies about the dangers faced by journalists, the Israeli occupation continues to target media personnel.
Journalists in Gaza have reported that they are frequently struck despite wearing clearly marked press vests and helmets, a violation of international law and press freedoms.
In a statement, Gaza’s Government Media Office confirmed that Abu Shuqah’s death marks the 174th journalist killed since the war began, highlighting the unprecedented scale of violence against the media.
“Journalists are being deliberately targeted as part of a broader strategy to silence the truth about what is happening in Gaza,” the statement read.
Ongoing Genocide
The massacre in Al-Bureij is part of Israel’s ongoing brutal campaign in Gaza, now in its 347th consecutive day. The airstrikes, ground offensives, and missile attacks have devastated densely populated civilian areas, with homes, schools, and hospitals repeatedly hit.
Despite global calls for a ceasefire, the violence has only escalated, with Israel continuing its wide-scale destruction of Palestinian infrastructure.
The latest figures from Gaza’s Ministry of Health reveal that the death toll from Israel’s military operations has risen to 41,252, with 95,497 injured since the bombardment began on October 7, 2023.
These figures include thousands of women and children, as the war leaves no corner of Gaza untouched.
