Hezbollah has accused Israel of committing the simultaneous explosion of thousands of communication devices in Lebanon, in a second statement it issued on Monday Sep. 17th, 2024.
“After examining all the facts, current data, and available information about the sinful attack that took place this afternoon, we hold the Israeli enemy fully responsible for this criminal aggression that targeted civilians too,” the group said.
The Lebanese cabinet has also decried what they described an “Israeli criminal aggression, which is a dangerous violation to Lebanon’s sovereignty”, the Lebanese information minister said.
In a previous statement, the group clarified that “At approximately 3:30pm [12:30 GMT] on Tuesday 09-17-2024, a number of message-receiving devices known as ‘pagers’ exploded, which were owned by a number of workers in various Hezbollah units and institutions.”
Firas Al-Abyad, the minister of health, said that nine people, including eight-year-old girl from the Bekaa Valley, are now confirmed dead in a series of explosions that targeted pagers across the country.
At least other 2,750 people have been injured either in the face or arms and in some cases in the abdomen; more than 200 are in critical condition.
The casualties were moved to 100 hospitals across the country; the southern hospitals have exceeded their capacity and the ministry is working on transferring injuries to be treated in facilities elsewhere.
Hezbollah affirmed that the resistance, at all its levels and various units, is at the highest level of readiness to defend Lebanon and its steadfast people.
It added that it will continue to support the “Palestinian resistance” and added the “treacherous and criminal enemy will certainly be punished for this aggressive act”.
On the other hand, the Israeli prime minister’s office released a statement distancing himself from the operation, saying that he’s “not in the circle of consultations”.
However, a person who used to be a spokesperson in the Israeli prime minister’s office commented on the incident, alleging that Israel was behind this, according to Israeli media.
One Israeli channel also reported that the prime minister has given a directive to his government and ministers to not talk about the explosion and to not conduct interviews or discussions.
