The Jewish Chronicle is ensnared in a profound crisis after four of several esteemed columnists left their career in the aftermath of revelations that the newspaper had disseminated falsified reports concerning Gaza and Hamas.
The scandal unfolded when the newspaper’s editor, Jake Wallis Simons, conceded that they had been “deceived” by freelance journalist Elon Perry, whose reports have now been thoroughly discredited.
Elon Perry, who had fabricated reports including claims that Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar intended to smuggle Israeli prisoners, including himself, to Iran, has been accused of extensive dishonesty in his journalism.
This misinformation echoed unverified assertions previously made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
An investigation conducted by both the Israeli military and media has since confirmed the falsity of Perry’s reports. This scandal has profoundly unsettled the Jewish Chronicle, renowned as the world’s oldest Jewish newspaper.
Accordingly, the Jewish Chronicle undertook a “thorough internal investigation,” leading to the removal of all of Elon Perry’s articles from its website.
David Baddiel, Jonathan Freedland, David Aaronovitch, and Hadley Freeman announced they would no longer write for the Jewish publication, according to statements and posts on X.
Columnist Hadley Freeman declared that “recent events have made it impossible for [her] to remain.”
Likewise, distinguished columnist Jonathan Freedland denounced the paper for straying from its journalistic principles and voiced concerns about the opacity of its ownership, demanding increased transparency.
The controversy has incited calls for the resignation of editor Jake Wallis Simons. Although Simons has accepted full responsibility and pledged to institute “stricter editorial processes,” he remains in his position.
The Jewish Chronicle’s reputation, however, has been severely tarnished, casting doubt on its credibility and future.
The Jewish Chronicle’s investigation into Perry began shortly after the Israeli army announced its own probe into leaked documents from Gaza, which were reportedly aimed at influencing public opinion on prisoners negotiations.
