The Israeli occupation government’s passing of a law allowing the detention of Palestinian children under the age of 14 is an apartheid law, said Palestinian lawyer Uday Mansour on Thursday, July 13, 2023.
Uday Mansour, a lawyer from Adalah Center, explained, “The current law, which passed preliminary reading, basically aims to impose actual imprisonment on everyone – Palestinian – under the age of 14.”
“The law was protecting children under thr age of 14, but this law actually imposes an apartheid regime. Israeli law does not impose house arrest on Israeli prisoners, but it imposes actual detention on Palestinians under the age of 14,” he added.
He added that although international law protects all the rights of minors, “the Israeli policy takes away childhood from Palestinian children like the child Ahmed Manasra, who spent all his childhood in Israeli prisons.”
“It’s an apartheid and racial law that violates the Palestinians’ rights which is against international law,” Mansour continued.
He indicated that such an apartheid law would increase the number of Palestinian detainees in prisons by detaining more children under the age of 14, which would cause them psychological and social issues.
On July 5, the Israeli Knesset passed a law stipulating that the Israeli courts have the power to issue prison sentences against Palestinian children under the age of 14.
