The Palestinian Commission for Prisoners’ Affairs reported that the number of administrative detainees held in Israeli prisons has recently increased to over 1,200, the highest it has been in past years.
The Commission said in a statement that the number of administrative detainees has drastically increased this year due to the occupation authorities’ issue of about 1,000 orders of renewal and new detentions since the start of the year – a level unseen before.
The Commission added that the Israeli oppressive occupation has resorted to administrative detainment as a mean of collective punishment against the Palestinian populace, disregarding the international legal standards that put boundaries on such procedures.
The Commission highlighted that administrative detention is a decidedly arbitrary policy whose purpose is to deprive prisoners of life without any legal basis. It is enforced on the foundation of secret charges, concealed from view and prohibited from being inspected. In addition, renewal of the prolonged detention, extending either three or six months, is commonly seen, and could even endure for a protracted period.
The Commission strongly urged swift action to halt these practices against the Palestinian detainees, and to squarely abide by the regulations of humanitarian law in relation to the enforcement of administrative detention. They further encouraged backing the efforts of administrative detainees to resist any prospective escalation.
