Farha: the Netflix Movie Angering Israel

Netflix is currently showing the film “Farha” by Jordanian director Darrin Salam, which recounts the events of 1948 “that led to the State of Israel” from the perspective of a Palestinian girl, Netflix’s screening of the film sparked outrage in Israel and demands to cancel subscriptions to that platform.

Madness

Israeli Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a statement posted on his Twitter account:

It is insane that Netflix broadcasts a film aimed to create a false pretext and incite hatred against Israeli soldiers.

“An incendiary film full of lies against Israeli soldiers”

“We will not allow defamation of soldiers of the Israeli army.”

“I directed the professional leadership in the Ministry of Finance to take measures to withdraw the budget from the Saraya Theater in Jaffa, which screened the movie.

The Story

The film represents the first experience of author and director Darine Salam, starring Karam Taher, Ashraf Barhoum, Ali Suleiman, and Samira Al-Assi, and its makers say that it is inspired by real events of a 14-year-old Palestinian girl who dreams of moving from her Palestinian village to the city to continue her education, but the village’s exposure to the invasion pushes the father To hide her in a small room, where she saw, through a small hole, many massacres, which did not stop her clinging to hope.

Festivals and awards

The film premiered globally as the official selection for the 46th Toronto International Film Festival 2021 in Canada

The film won the jury award at the 12th session of the Malmo Arab Film Festival in Sweden

The film won the European Union Award after the International Women’s Film Festival held in Egypt last March

The film has been screened at several film festivals around the world, including in Italy, the United States and Saudi Arabia

Jordan nominated the film to be represented in the competition for the best foreign film Oscar, in the 95th edition of the
World’s Most Famous Film Award

Not the first

“Farha” is not the first film to raise controversy about supposed Israeli operations during the events that accompanied the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, which the Palestinians call the “Nakba”. Earlier, Israeli director Alon Schwartz faced violent reactions against the backdrop of his documentary, which depicted a supposed massacre of Palestinians in the village of Tantura in 1948.

More than 760 Palestinians were displaced and expelled during the war that erupted during the establishment of the State of Israel.

Israel today refuses to recognize these people’s right to return after their numbers have risen to millions in the world.

Calls for greater transparency about Israeli forces’ behaviour during the conflict have escalated in recent years, even among Israeli activists.
