Two Palestinian Graduate poets from the Islamic University of Gaza won on Thursday, 24 November 2022 the Palestine Book Award organized by the London-based Middle East Monitor for the best books published in the English language.
The two Palestinians Graduate poets Musab Abu Toha and Heba Abdel Salam Al-Hayek from the Islamic University of Gaza won the Palestine Book Award organized by Middle East Monitor for the best books published in the English language about Palestine.
The Creativity Category award went to Palestinian Graduate poet Abu Toha for his first collection of poetry written all in English “Things You Can Find Hidden in My Ear” deals with life in Gaza under Israeli occupation and siege, his childhood in the camp and the emigration of his family from Jaffa on 1948.
Abu Toha is the first poet from Gaza to publish a book of poetry in English. He also has a number of poems, short stories, and articles published in several Arab and international magazines and newspapers.
In the same context, the Creativity Category award went to Palestinian Graduate poet Al-Hayek for her book “Sambac Under Unexpected Skies” which talks about a deported woman’s memories and her longing for her homeland, Gaza, in addition to the Palestinian women’s resistance.
It is worth mentioning that the Palestine Book Award aims to honor the best books published in English for writers from outside Palestine, and it has four categories: the academic award, the creative award, the translation award, the countercurrent award, and the achievement award.
In its eleventh year, 51 books were submitted to the award in various fields and the names of 9 award winners were announced after being evaluated by a jury consisting of academics, translators, researchers, and Arab and foreign writers.
