U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland called Tuesday, September 22, for an independent US investigation into the brutal murder of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Aqleh, criticizing the results of the first Israeli investigation into the circumstances of her killing.
In a tweet on his Twitter account, Hollen said: “The crux of the “defense” in this IDF report is that a soldier was “returning fire” from militants. But investigations New York Times, the Associated Press, CNN, Washington Post, and United Nations found no such firing at the time.”

He pointed out that the results of the Israeli investigation confirm the “need for independent US inquiry into this American journalist’s death.”
In advance, an Israeli military probe concluded there was a “high probability” that an Israeli soldier “accidentally” shot dead Al Jazeera correspondent Shireen Abu Akleh in May.
Shireen Abu Akleh, who was a household name in the Middle East, was murdered in May while she was covering the Israeli occupation invasion into Jenin in the occupied West Bank, despite wearing a bulletproof vest marked “PRESS” standing in a scrum of journalists.
