Hebrew Sources: Smotrich Presents the law of Sovereignty Over the West Bank
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Hebrew newspaper “Israel Hayom” reported today, Wednesday, June 15th that the Ministerial Committee for Legislation is expected to discuss, during its meeting on Sunday, the draft law to impose Israeli sovereignty on the West Bank, which was presented by the head of the Religious Zionism party, Bezalel Smotrich.

The introduction of this bill comes at a time when the Israeli Knesset previously dropped the extension of the law legalizing the occupation in the West Bank, which imposes on the settlements Israeli law, after the right-wing parties in the opposition opposed it after announcing the vote against any bill proposed by the government.

The newspaper suggested that the Ministerial Committee for Legislation would not approve the bill to impose Israeli sovereignty on the West Bank, and that the right-wing parties in the government, Yamina and Tikva Hadasha, would not approve it and that they would justify this by saying that the government maintains the status quo.

The newspaper pointed out that the Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennett, reiterated that there will be no political process, i.e. negotiations with the Palestinians, and that Israel will not annex the West Bank.

According to the newspaper, Smotrich is presenting the bill as a challenge to the right-wing parties in the government, while the atmosphere of the elections for the Knesset is clouding the political arena, and ministers from the two right-wing parties in the government, Ayelet Shaked, Gideon Sa’ar and Ze’ev Elkin, will demand “to vote against the imposition of sovereignty, contrary to their positions.”

The newspaper quoted sources in religious Zionism as saying that “we listened to the statements of Bennett and Avigdor Lieberman about the right-wing government, and that the government worked more than any previous government for national values and for Judea and Samaria (the West Bank), and we also see that the coalition is facing difficulties due to internal rivalries.” in passing the regimes of Judea and Samaria (ie the apartheid law). Zionism is more important than any small policy.”

The same sources added, “Next Sunday, we will present the Sovereignty Law over Judea and Samaria before the Ministerial Committee for Legislation, and we will be pleased that the government takes the full credit in order to pass the law. We have no doubt that Lieberman, Yamina, and Tikva Hadasha will support the law, and thus the systems of Judea and Samaria will not be needed.”
