The Commission of Detainees and Ex-Prisoners Affairs confirmed on Sunday, May, 4th, that the Israeli occupation prison administration is still deliberately practicing a policy of medical neglect against Palestinian detainees, which violates all international agreements and laws for all prisoners under international law have the right to receive medical treatment and be provided with healthcare
In this context, the Commission, quoting its lawyer, revealed a number of medical cases in the occupation detention centers, including the case of Firas Ghanem, 46, from Kafr Aqab, north of occupied Jerusalem, who suffers from heart problems, glands, and chronic infections in the sinuses. He suffers from urinary tract problems and back discs.
The commission’s lawyer indicated that the detainee Ghanem was taking heart pacemaker and glandular medications, as well as sinus and breathing sprays, and after he was transferred to Ashkelon detention center, the prison administration informed him that most of these medications are not available, adding that there is still a delay in providing them.
He referred to the case of the detainee Nasser Angawi (48 years), from Beit Sira, Ramallah, and Al-Bireh governorate, who is sentenced to 25 years in prison, as he suffers from dental problems, and recently lost part of it as a result of severe inflammation, and that the treatment he received was not sufficient and he urgently needs to be admitted to A doctor who specializes in treating it.
The lawyer stated that the prisoner, Dhafer Al-Rimawi, 43, from Beit Rima in the Ramallah and Al-Bireh governorate, has been suffering from thyroid problems and disorders for years, but it was recently discovered by the detainees’ doctors.
The 43-year-old was going through a stage of kidney failure, permanent laziness, and general fatigue. An x-ray was performed on him, in which it was found that the thyroid gland was hyperactive (working too much) and that it had exhausted all its capabilities and was destroyed.
The detainee administration explained that this condition was exacerbated by medical negligence, as Al-Rimawi’s blood was drowned for testing only twice during his 21-years period of detention, which caused His condition to deteriorate.
Al-Rimawi is yet still awaiting the result of his last blood examination.
The Commission for Detainees and Ex-Prisoners Affairs held the occupation prisons administration fully responsible for the continuation of the policy of medical neglect against Palestinian detainees and called on international institutions, human rights institutions, and the Red Cross to play their necessary role in the issue of detainees, especially those who are in need of urgent medical intervention.
