DaysofPal – The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has sounded an urgent alarm over the scale of hunger in Gaza, warning that as of July 2025, every child under the age of five in the besieged enclave, more than 320,000, faces the risk of acute malnutrition.
In a statement, WFP said that families are now surviving on the bare minimum of basic foods, with almost no nutritional diversity. The agency called for an immediate ceasefire to enable the large-scale delivery of humanitarian aid, stressing that nearly half a million Palestinians are already on the brink of famine.
According to WFP, the aid currently entering Gaza falls far short of needs. Deliveries represent only 47 percent of the program’s daily target, leaving operations severely crippled.
The agency noted that hot meal distributions and the operation of WFP-supported bakeries cannot resume without a dramatic increase in the flow of supplies.
Amnesty International has echoed these warnings, accusing Israel of deliberately starving Gaza’s population. In a report published this week, Amnesty said Israel is waging “a deliberate starvation campaign” designed to systematically destroy the health and social fabric of Palestinians.
The report cited testimonies from displaced families and medical staff treating malnourished children, with accounts of infants and young children “being left to starve to death.”
The rights group called for an immediate and unconditional lifting of Israel’s blockade on Gaza, an end to arms transfers to Israel, and sanctions to pressure it to comply with international law.
Amnesty also urged the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and other humanitarian organizations to be granted safe, unhindered access to all parts of Gaza.
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has likewise condemned Israel’s denial of food to Gaza’s civilians, warning earlier this month that it may amount to a crime against humanity. He said Israel’s severe restrictions on humanitarian access continue to push Gaza’s 2.1 million residents closer to famine, as aid deliveries remain “far below the required level.”
