DaysofPal- Families across the Gaza Strip are facing extreme hardship due to severe food shortages and extensive destruction, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) said on Tuesday, cautioning that humanitarian needs remain overwhelming and living conditions increasingly critical.
UNRWA reported that civilians continue to endure worsening daily conditions as access to food and basic services remains severely restricted.
Citing data from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), the agency said an estimated 1.6 million people in Gaza are currently experiencing acute levels of food insecurity.
The concern was reinforced by World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who warned that more than 100,000 children, as well as roughly 37,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women, may face acute malnutrition by April 2026.
Ghebreyesus emphasized that any recent gains in averting famine in Gaza are highly unstable.
His comments came after the publication of the latest IPC report, which forecasts that at least 1.6 million residents will remain severely food insecure through mid-April 2026.
The report warned that renewed hostilities or interruptions to humanitarian assistance could rapidly push Gaza toward famine conditions.
Ghebreyesus also drew attention to the near-collapse of Gaza’s healthcare system, stating that only around half of the medical facilities are functioning even partially.
He highlighted critical shortages of medicines and equipment and urged the immediate and unrestricted entry of medical aid to help restore essential, life-saving services.
Humanitarian organizations continue to warn that without sustained access to food, healthcare, and vital assistance, conditions in Gaza are expected to deteriorate further in the months ahead.
