UNRWA: Over 2.1 Million Gazans Face Bombardment and Starvation

DaysofPal- The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has issued a dire warning about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, where over 2.1 million people remain trapped amid relentless bombardment and severe shortages of food, medicine, and essential supplies.

In a statement released Saturday, the agency called for an immediate ceasefire, the lifting of the Israeli crippling blockade, and the reopening of crossings to allow desperately needed aid into the besieged territory.

A Population Under Siege

Since the Israeli occupation resumed its military campaign in Gaza on March 18, thousands have been killed or wounded, while the population faces what UNRWA describes as a “catastrophic” humanitarian crisis.

The Israeli occupation power has tightened its blockade by closing all crossings, completely halting the entry of food, medicine, fuel, and other critical supplies for seven weeks. As a result, vital resources are piling up at Gaza’s borders, unable to reach those who need them most.

More than two million Palestinians—many of whom are refugees displaced multiple times over decades—are now enduring not only constant bombardment but also starvation and deprivation. With no safe haven within the enclave, families are left with little choice but to endure the horrors unfolding around them.

Humanitarian Aid Blocked

UNRWA emphasized that the ongoing blockade has exacerbated an already dire situation. Food supplies, medical equipment, fuel for generators, and tents for shelter are stuck at Gaza’s crossings, rendering international relief efforts effectively paralyzed. The agency warned that without urgent intervention, the consequences will be catastrophic, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and the sick.

“The people of Gaza are being bombarded and starved,” the statement read. “We urgently call for a renewed ceasefire, the lifting of the blockade, and unimpeded access to deliver life-saving assistance.”

Escalating Israeli genocide

Israeli occupation forces intensified military genocide since late March, resulting in widespread destruction across Gaza, targeting homes, hospitals, schools, and infrastructure indispensable to civilian survival. The strikes have further compounded the suffering of a population already enduring years of occupation, blockade, and repeated crimes of Israeli war.

Critics argue that the blockade amounts to collective punishment, violating international humanitarian law by deliberately depriving civilians of necessities. Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation maintains that its actions are necessary to counter threats posed by Hamas and other militant groups operating within the territory.

Calls for Immediate Action

UNRWA’s plea comes amid growing international concern over the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza. The agency reiterated that sustained access to aid is essential to prevent further loss of life and alleviate the immense suffering endured by civilians. It urged world leaders to pressure the Israeli occupation to reopen crossings and ensure the uninterrupted flow of supplies into the strip.

The agency also highlighted the long-term implications of the current crisis, warning that prolonged deprivation and trauma will leave deep scars on Gaza’s population, particularly its youngest members. “The future of an entire generation is at stake,” the statement added.

Global Response Needed

As protests and calls for accountability grow globally, activists and human rights organizations continue to demand action from the international community. Many accuse powerful nations, including the United States and several European countries, of enabling Israeli crimes through diplomatic protection and material support.

For now, the people of Gaza endure unimaginable hardships, caught between airstrikes above and starvation below. Their plight serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for political solutions and meaningful accountability to address the root causes of this protracted genocide.
