DaysofPal- The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has reported that 100 children were killed in Gaza since the ceasefire took effect in October 2025, highlighting the continuing humanitarian crisis despite the halt in large-scale hostilities.
James Elder, UNICEF spokesperson speaking from a field mission in Gaza, described conditions for children as extremely harsh, with families struggling against winter storms, flooded tents, and inadequate heating.
Elder said the toll averages one child death per day, caused by both the lingering effects of conflict and extreme weather.
“Strong winds blow through the camps, tents sway, children are soaked, and there is no means of heating,” Elder said.
“Malnutrition is widespread, and children’s immune systems are collapsing.” He added.
While noting some progress, including the opening of a UNICEF educational center in northern Gaza and several health clinics, Elder emphasized that aid remains insufficient to meet basic needs.
Israeli restrictions on essential medicines and cooking gas continue to endanger children’s lives, he said.
Of the 100 children killed since the ceasefire, both boys and girls are included, with many deaths considered preventable if full humanitarian and ceasefire conditions were implemented. Elder also highlighted the ongoing disruption to education: despite efforts to return 150,000 children to school, only one in five currently has access to learning.
Harsh winter conditions have compounded the crisis. Elder reported that seven young children have already died from hypothermia this season, as families living in tents are exposed to heavy rain, wind, and high humidity.
He further warned that the Israeli suspension of some civil society organizations operating in Gaza could worsen the humanitarian situation, stressing the vital role of groups like Médecins Sans Frontières in providing medical, nutritional, and psychological support.
Elder said UNICEF continues to coordinate with the Israeli occupation to deliver essential aid, noting that approximately 75% of planned assistance has reached Gaza since the ceasefire.
He called for urgent action to provide critical medicines, cooking gas, and other supplies to save lives and protect children from preventable deaths.
