In a historic move, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is preparing to declare ancient Jericho, nestled in the West Bank, as a Palestinian heritage site. The decision, slated for a vote during the 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Riyadh from September 10 to 25, is met with applause from Palestinian representatives and international advocates of cultural preservation.

Jericho, hailed as one of the world’s oldest continually inhabited cities, bears an awe-inspiring historical legacy dating back to around 9000 BCE. Its claim to fame includes the honor of possessing the world’s oldest known protective wall.

The UNESCO proposal seeks to shine a spotlight on the profound historical and cultural significance that Jericho holds for the Palestinian people. Moreover, it underscores the pressing need to safeguard this ancient treasure from potential harm or destruction by the Israeli occupation.

While the decision has provoked some Israeli politicians and media outlets to criticize UNESCO for allegedly “undermining Jewish ties” to the region and interfering in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it’s essential to recognize the humanitarian intentions behind this move. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay has been instrumental in ensuring that cultural heritage is preserved and celebrated worldwide, and this decision aligns with that mission.

Dan Illouz, a Likud lawmaker, has written to Azoulay, expressing his concerns. He contends that “the Palestinian Authority works systematically to erase all ties of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel.” However, it’s worth noting that UNESCO’s goal is not to diminish one culture’s history but to acknowledge the rich tapestry of heritage in the region.

UNESCO’s impending recognition of ancient Jericho reflects its commitment to promoting education, science, and culture for peace and sustainable development across the globe. With 193 member states and 11 associate members, UNESCO stands as a beacon of hope in safeguarding and celebrating the world’s diverse cultural treasures.

The pending vote on Jericho’s heritage status signifies a significant step towards acknowledging the rich Palestinian heritage intertwined with this ancient city. As UNESCO moves forward with this decision, it demonstrates its dedication to preserving cultural history while respecting the diverse narratives and historical accounts that make up this complex and multifaceted region. The international community awaits the outcome with anticipation, as this decision has the potential to contribute positively to peace-building efforts in the region.
