DaysofPal- The United Nations has warned that while humanitarian access to Gaza has improved since the ceasefire, serious barriers continue to hinder the delivery of life-saving aid and medical support across the war-torn enclave.
In its latest situation report, the UN said only about 5 percent of aid shipments are now being blocked, a sharp decrease from 80 percent between May and October.
Despite this progress, the volume of aid entering Gaza remains “far below the level required to meet urgent needs,” according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The health system, already shattered by months of siege and bombardment, is under immense strain. Only one-third of Gaza’s health facilities are currently operational, including 14 of 36 hospitals and 10 of 16 field hospitals.
The loss of more than 1,700 healthcare workers since October 2023 has left remaining staff overwhelmed and exhausted.
Doctors continue to perform emergency surgeries and evacuations despite severe shortages of medicine, fuel, and equipment.
Overcrowding, poor sanitation, and widespread malnutrition have created conditions ripe for disease outbreaks, with humanitarian groups warning that children and the elderly are most at risk.
“While access has improved, the situation on the ground remains catastrophic,” the UN report said.
“Millions of civilians face acute shortages of food, clean water, and medical care.” It added.
Aid agencies are urging greater international pressure on the Israeli occupation to ensure consistent entry of supplies and the protection of medical staff.
Without sustained and unhindered access, the UN warned, Gaza’s humanitarian crisis could deepen further, placing millions of lives at risk.
