DaysofPal— The Hamas Movement has called on the United Nations and the international community to take decisive action to expose and hold Israeli occupation accountable for the ongoing Israeli torture, atrocities and systematic abuses against Palestinian prisoners.
In a statement issued Friday to mark the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the Movement urged human rights and humanitarian organizations to initiate legal proceedings in international courts against Israeli leaders who are committing torture and other violations against Palestinians.
Hamas condemned the widespread and systematic mistreatment of detainees held in Israeli prisons, including physical and psychological torture, as well as deprivation of basic rights such as medical care, family visits, and adequate food.
The Movement stressed the need for increased international pressure to reveal the fate of thousands of Palestinians held in Israeli custody and to allow their families visitation rights, along with granting access to detention facilities for human rights organizations to assess conditions.
Hamas also criticized the contradiction in the stance of international institutions, noting that while the United Nations observes June 26 annually as a day against torture, Israeli violations against Palestinian detainees continue.
The Israeli prison authorities impose harsh and inhumane conditions on thousands of prisoners, including women, children, and the elderly, as well as medical professionals and civilian workers detained during the ongoing Israeli genocidal war.
The Movement described the international observance as an opportunity to shed light the consistent Israeli policy of abuse, reiterating that such practices represent a serious violation of international laws and conventions.
The United Nations General Assembly designated June 26 as the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture in 1997, marking the date when the Convention Against Torture came into force in 1987.
Hamas concluded by stating that approximately 9,500 Palestinian prisoners remain in Israeli detention under harsh conditions involving ongoing physical and psychological suffering.
