DaysofPal- The United Nations announced that more than 16,500 Palestinian patients in Gaza urgently require life-saving medical care outside the besieged Strip, as the health system continues to collapse under the weight of more than two years of war.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said during a press briefing on Tuesday that with the arrival of winter, and the additional hardships it brings for already exhausted Palestinians, the UN and its humanitarian partners are working tirelessly to expand assistance to those in need, especially children.
Dujarric noted that thousands of essential relief items have been delivered to families who have endured severe hardship throughout the war, including shoes, clothing, blankets, towels, and other basic supplies.
He added that by the end of November, humanitarian teams had distributed 160 “activity tents,” providing thousands of children with access to mental-health and psychosocial support services, as well as case-management assistance.
On the medical front, Dujarric confirmed that a World Health Organization team led an evacuation mission on Monday, transferring 18 patients and 54 accompanying relatives out of Gaza for treatment abroad.
Despite these efforts, he stressed that over 16,500 patients remain in urgent need of life-saving care outside the territory.
The Israeli occupation continues to violate the ceasefire agreement that has been in place since October 10, resulting in hundreds of Palestinian casualties and further straining the already devastated healthcare system.
The Israeli occupation also continues to block the entry of sufficient food, medicine, and medical supplies into Gaza, where approximately 2.4 million Palestinians are living in catastrophic and inhumane conditions.
