DaysofPal- A senior United Nations official has warned of a rapidly worsening humanitarian crisis in Lebanon and Iran, citing large-scale displacement triggered by ongoing hostilities.
Babar Baloch, spokesperson for the UNHCR, said that Israeli attacks over the past month have displaced more than one million people in Lebanon, roughly one-fifth of the country’s population.
He described the situation in Lebanon as “extremely alarming,” with displaced families sheltering in overcrowded collective centers under harsh living conditions while enduring psychological trauma from continued bombardment.
According to Baloch, approximately 200,000 people have fled Lebanon into Syria over the past month, most of them Syrian refugees returning amid the escalation.
Cross-border movement continues at an average rate of around 7,000 people per day.
UNHCR teams and partner organizations are assisting, but the official warned that ongoing violence is significantly increasing humanitarian needs.
Lebanon, he said, requires more than $300 million in aid to support affected populations in the coming months.
Turning to Iran, Baloch reported that internal displacement has exceeded three million people during the same period. Iran is also hosting approximately 1.6 million Afghan refugees, adding further strain to its resources.
Despite the scale of internal displacement, there has been no major outward migration from Iran to neighboring countries.
UNHCR has appealed for $80 million in funding to assist those affected, aiming to reach around 2.8 million people, including 1.8 million Afghan refugees.
The figures underscore the growing scale of the humanitarian crisis in both countries, as UN agencies issue urgent calls for increased international support, including food aid, medical assistance, and emergency shelter for displaced populations.
