UN Secretary-General’s Middle East Envoy, Tor Wennesland, called Head of Hamas Political Bureau Ismail Haniyeh and discussed the latest political and field developments related to the Palestinian cause.
Haniyeh briefed Wennesland on the recent Israeli practices in the occupied West Bank, Gaza Strip, and Jerusalem, pointing to targeted assassinations. He denounced the incursions by Israeli settlers and Israeli occupation leaders, including extremist Israeli MK Itamar Ben Gvir and foreign minister Yair Lapid, who stormed the Bab al-Amud area in Jerusalem’s Old City.
Haniyeh called on the UN to play its role in putting an end to such Israeli practices in Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque and providing access for all Palestinian worshippers from the West Bank and the Palestinian territories occupied in 1948 to the Muslim sacred compound.
For his part, Wennesland briefed Haniyeh on the UN’s efforts in this regard.
The UN envoy hailed the relationship with Hamas as “constructive and strategic.”
