DaysofPal- The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in the Occupied Palestinian Territory has warned that civilians in Gaza continue to be killed as a result of Israeli military violations, describing the situation as part of a pattern of ongoing violence despite a ceasefire agreement reached after nearly two years of war.
Ajith Sunghay, head of the UN Human Rights Office in the Palestinian territory, said the international community must step up diplomatic pressure and support efforts to stop the violence and advance recovery and reconstruction based on a human rights–centered approach.
Sunghay said conditions in Gaza remain dire, stressing that deaths are still being reported on a daily basis.
He attributed the casualties both to continued Israeli attacks and to restrictions imposed by the Israeli occupation on the entry of humanitarian assistance, particularly materials needed for shelter.
These limitations, he said, have contributed to fatalities caused by severe cold weather and the collapse of damaged buildings on civilians.
According to the UN office, since the ceasefire came into force, Israeli violations have resulted in the deaths of at least 477 Palestinians and injuries to 1,301 others.
The broader conflict, which Palestinian officials describe as having been carried out with U.S. backing, has left more than 71,000 Palestinians dead and over 171,000 wounded, according to local and UN figures.
The war has also caused widespread devastation, with an estimated 90 percent of Gaza’s civilian infrastructure damaged or destroyed.
The United Nations has placed the cost of reconstruction at approximately $70 billion.
