DaysofPal – The United Nations General Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution calling on Israel to implement the International Court of Justice’s ruling requiring the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.
The resolution was adopted during a voting session on a draft submitted by Norway and supported by 13 countries, titled “Strengthening the United Nations System.”
A total of 139 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while 12 countries, led by the United States and Israel, voted against it. Nineteen countries abstained.
The resolution obliges Israel to provide food, water, medicine, and shelter to the population of the besieged Gaza Strip and to refrain from obstructing relief operations.
It also calls on Israel to allow full access for humanitarian assistance and to cease obstructing the work of the United Nations and its relevant partners.
The resolution specifically notes that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is an indispensable body in the delivery of humanitarian aid in Gaza.
It further affirms the United Nations’ responsibility toward the Palestinian cause until a comprehensive solution is achieved.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel, with U.S. support, has waged a war of extermination against the population of the Gaza Strip, involving killing, starvation, destruction, and forced displacement, while disregarding international calls to halt the war and orders issued by the International Court of Justice.
This has resulted in the deaths of more than 63,000 Palestinians, most of them women and children, and around 160,000 injuries.
On October 10 of last year, a ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Israel entered into force, which was supposed to bring an end to the genocide.
However, Israel violated the agreement repeatedly, causing the deaths and injuries of hundreds of Palestinian civilians.
