Trump Vows to Revoke Harvard’s Tax-Exempt Status Over Antisemitism Allegations

DayofPal– U.S. President Donald Trump intensified his confrontation with elite academic institutions on Friday, announcing plans to revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status in response to what he claims is the university’s tolerance of antisemitism and far-left ideologies.

In a post published on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump declared, “We are going to be taking away Harvard’s Tax Exempt Status. It’s what they deserve!”

The statement, which offered no timeline or procedural specifics, marks a sharp escalation in the former president’s ongoing campaign against prominent universities. Since his return to public office, Trump has leveraged federal authority to pressure higher education institutions, threatening funding freezes and initiating federal probes.

He contends that America’s colleges and universities have become bastions of antisemitism and radical Marxist ideologies, which he claims threaten free speech and national values.

Harvard, one of the country’s most prestigious and wealthiest institutions, has forcefully pushed back. The university filed a lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s decision to halt federal research grants and joined a coalition of over 200 academic institutions protesting recent education directives from Washington.

Nonprofit institutions such as Harvard benefit from federal tax exemptions under IRS rules, a status granted to promote public welfare through education, research, and community service. While rare, this designation can be revoked if organizations violate specific legal criteria.

Trump’s threats to withdraw Harvard’s status include broader demands, such as banning masks and dismantling diversity programs, that critics say are designed to chill campus expression.

“There is no legal basis to rescind Harvard’s tax-exempt status,” said university spokesperson Jason Newton. “Such an unprecedented action would severely undermine our educational mission.”

He added that stripping the university of its exemption could result in significant reductions in student financial aid and hinder critical research efforts.

Harvard receives an estimated $9 billion annually in federal support, much of it directed toward research and medical innovation. Its endowment, the largest in the nation, currently stands at $53.2 billion.

Democratic lawmakers have condemned the proposal, calling it a blatant attempt to use executive power for political retaliation. Several Senate Democrats have urged the Department of Justice to investigate the legality of Trump’s actions, warning that targeting nonprofit entities for ideological reasons violates constitutional protections.
