Three Mamdani-Backed Pro-Palestine Candidates Defeat Pro-Israel Rivals in NY Primaries

DayofPal— Progressive candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani secured a series of major victories in Democratic primary elections, delivering a significant setback to candidates closely aligned with the Israeli lobby.

The most notable upset came in a congressional race where community organizer and pro-Palestine activist Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated longtime incumbent Adriano Espaillat to win the Democratic nomination.

Avila Chevalier campaigned on immigrant rights, economic justice, and support for Palestinian rights, becoming one of the most closely watched candidates of the election cycle.

Two other Mamdani-backed candidates also emerged victorious. Brad Lander defeated incumbent Congressman Dan Goldman, while Claire Valdez secured the Democratic nomination for an open congressional seat.

Both candidates are expected to remain prominent voices within the party’s progressive wing.

Advocates for Palestinian rights described the election results as a turning point, arguing that unconditional support for Israel is facing increasing scrutiny among Democratic voters.

The victories come amid growing public criticism of US military support for Israel and rising support for Palestinian rights, particularly among younger and progressive constituencies.

The campaigns unfolded despite significant spending by pro-Israel lobbying organizations, including AIPAC and allied groups, which have invested heavily in recent election cycles to defeat progressive candidates critical of Israeli government policies.

Supporters of the winning candidates say the results could strengthen efforts in Congress to challenge unconditional military aid to Israel and increase pressure for greater accountability regarding US support for the war on Gaza.

While US foreign policy remains broadly aligned with Israel across both major political parties, political observers say the New York primary results reflect shifting attitudes within Democratic politics and a growing willingness among voters to support candidates advocating for Palestinian rights.

The victories are being viewed by many activists as one of the clearest electoral signs yet that the Palestinian cause has become an increasingly influential issue in American political discourse.
