DaysofPal- Hundreds of aid trucks are currently lined up at the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza in anticipation of the ceasefire agreement taking effect on Sunday.
This pivotal agreement, which also includes a hostage exchange deal, has been brokered between Israel and Hamas in Doha.
The aid trucks, originating from various parts of Egypt’s North Sinai region, have been waiting months to deliver essential supplies to the war-torn Strip.
These trucks carry food, clothing, medical supplies, tents, portable toilets, hygiene kits, and other critical relief items, highlighting the dire humanitarian needs in Gaza.
Under the terms of the agreement, humanitarian aid to Gaza is set to increase to as many as 600 trucks per day. However, a UN official cautioned on Thursday that this would be “just the beginning” of addressing the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in the region.
Data from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) shows that only 614 truckloads of aid entered Gaza between January 1 and January 13, far below the pre-war average of 500 trucks per day before the conflict escalated on October 7, 2023.
Amid growing hope among Palestinians regarding the ceasefire’s implementation, local authorities have begun taking practical measures to prepare for the anticipated influx of aid.
Municipal workers have started clearing rubble from central roads, and Palestinian police have issued guidelines to displaced families returning to homes in former war zones.
Residents of Rafah City, particularly in the eastern areas, have been warned not to approach their homes unless the buildings are thoroughly inspected for unexploded ordnance. Safety concerns remain high as families await the opportunity to return.
Humanitarian organizations, including the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), are ramping up efforts to facilitate aid delivery. UNRWA reports that at least 4,000 humanitarian trucks are ready to enter Gaza once the ceasefire deal takes effect. Relief agencies are working around the clock to address the immense needs of the population.
The upcoming implementation of the ceasefire agreement brings a glimmer of hope for millions in Gaza as efforts intensify to alleviate the humanitarian crisis and pave the way for rebuilding the region.
