DaysofPal- The harrowing ordeal of Moamen Musa, a Palestinian ex-prisoner released as part of the seventh batch of the first phase of the ceasefire agreement between Israeli occupation and Palestinian resistance groups, sheds light on the brutal realities faced by detainees in Israeli custody.
His story is one of unimaginable suffering, beginning at the so-called “Netzarim” checkpoint and culminating in months of solitary confinement and deliberate medical neglect.
A False Promise of Safety
On November 15, 2023, Moamen Musa arrived at the Netzarim checkpoint after being instructed by Israeli forces to relocate to “safe areas” in northern Gaza. What he encountered instead was anything but safety.
Upon arrival, soldiers surrounded him, shouting orders and threatening violence. When Musa refused to strip naked, an officer fired a warning shot near his foot, leaving him with a minor injury. Forced to comply, Musa was stripped of his dignity—and much more—as soldiers stole 65,000 shekels he had saved over years of work in the occupied territories and confiscated his work permit.
Brutal Treatment and Torture
Musa’s nightmare deepened when an occupation soldier forcibly inserted a bullet into his right ear, causing severe damage to his eardrum. Blood gushed from the wound, yet no medical attention was provided. Left bleeding and disoriented, Musa endured days of exposure to the elements, sitting in a rainwater-filled hole without food or water. His pleas for warmth or necessities fell on deaf ears.
Upon transfer to Gaza, Musa recounted how female soldiers beat him and other detainees with chains attached to iron balls, inflicting excruciating pain. Despite his injuries, he was forced to endure hours of abuse before being moved to detention facilities.
Solitary Confinement and Deliberate Neglect
Musa’s journey took a darker turn when he was transferred to Khiam prison in the Negev, followed by 145 days in solitary confinement at Nafha prison. During this time, jailers subjected him to relentless torture, including daily exposure to poisonous gas and merciless beatings whenever he requested better conditions.
Conditions deteriorated further as scabies spread among prisoners due to deliberate medical negligence. Even when the disease reached Israeli personnel, treatment remained inadequate for detainees. Musa lived in abysmal health conditions, with his requests for proper care consistently ignored.
Broken Promises and Emotional Devastation
On February 22, 2024, hope flickered briefly when detainees were informed of their impending release. However, Israeli occupation reneged on the agreement, returning them to prison after hours of anticipation. Upon finally securing his freedom on February 26, 2024, via the International Committee of the Red Cross, Musa returned to a Gaza unrecognizable due to widespread destruction caused by war.
Tragically, his homecoming was marred by devastating news: his brother Musa had been martyred just days earlier during forced displacement operations in southern Gaza. This loss added another layer of grief to his already shattered psyche.
A Cry for Justice and Accountability
Moamen Musa’s story is not unique; it echoes the experiences of countless Palestinians who have suffered under Israeli occupation.
From the moment of arrest to prolonged detention and systematic mistreatment, each stage of Musa’s journey highlights the urgent need for accountability and justice.
As the international community grapples with the complexities of the Israeli war on Gaza, cases like Musa’s underscore the importance of upholding human rights standards and ensuring that those responsible for such atrocities face consequences. Until then, stories like his will continue to serve as grim reminders of the human cost of occupation and impunity.
