DayofPal—Top Court has ordered the Israeli occupation authorities to provide an urgent update on the condition of detained Palestinian physician after growing fears that his life may be in imminent danger inside Israeli detention facilities, Haaretz reported.
The court instructed the Israeli occupation government to respond by 7 July to a petition demanding disclosure of Dr. Abu Safiya’s medical condition and the risks to his life while in custody.
The order follows months of mounting concern over his enforced isolation and the treatment of Palestinian detainees.
The legal petition was filed by (PHRI), which is seeking the release of other 14 Palestinian doctors from the Gaza Strip who were abducted by Israeli occupation forces during the ongoing genocide in the Gaza Strip.
PHRI noted that the petition was originally submitted on 30 April, but Israeli authorities repeatedly secured extensions, delaying judicial scrutiny of the doctors’ detention before the Supreme Court finally imposed what is expected to be a final deadline.
Dr. Abu Safiya’s case has become emblematic of Israel’s broader targeting of Gaza’s healthcare sector.
Palestinian and international human rights organizations have warned that the detention of doctors, nurses and other medical personnel forms part of a wider campaign against Gaza’s medical infrastructure, leaving hospitals critically understaffed while depriving civilians of lifesaving care.
Rights groups have also raised alarm over persistent reports of torture, medical neglect, inhumane conditions and other forms of abuse inside Israeli detention centres, warning that the continued concealment of detainees’ conditions heightens fears for their survival.
They stress that healthcare workers are protected under international humanitarian law and have called for the immediate release of all detained medical personnel unless they are promptly charged and afforded fair legal proceedings.
Haaretz claimed Supreme Court’s order represents a rare judicial intervention that could compel Israeli authorities to disclose information about Abu Safiya and other doctors that has remained hidden for months.
