The Palestinian Committee for Prisoners and ex-Prisoners’ Affairs announced that Walid Daqqa, a Cancer-stricken prisoner, passed away on Sunday evening at Assaf Harofeh Hospital due to his deteriorating health, a consequence of medical neglect.
Daqqa was diagnosed with spinal cancer in December 2022 that, along with other severe illnesses, paralysed him. However, he didn’t receive proper treatment.
Despite completing his actual sentence in March 2023, the Israeli Supreme Court had denied Daqqa’s release, despite pleas from his family and human rights organizations citing his worsening health.
Daqqa’s family had previously revealed that they were barred from communicating with him by the occupation authorities for over two months, even during the court hearing considering the appeal for his release.
Walid Daqqa, 62, from Baqa al-Gharbiyye inside the occupied territories, spent 38 years in occupation prisons.
He had been detained since 1986 and faced years of enduring medical neglect during his imprisonment. Despite his prolonged incarceration, his health deteriorated, leading to his tragic death.
