DaysofPal- The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is worsening, with urgent needs growing as winter sets in.
In an interview with Safa News Agency, ICRC spokesperson Amani Al-Naouq said residents in Gaza “are still struggling to rebuild their lives,” particularly those living in makeshift shelters and damaged tents for nearly two years.
Al-Naouq emphasized that heavy rains and strong winds have worsened already dire conditions.
“Tents cannot withstand the rain and strong winds,” she said, noting that hundreds of families have faced flooding and extreme cold, with many shelters damaged or destroyed.
The ICRC highlighted the urgent need for proper shelters, insulated materials, tarps, tent poles, and ropes, as well as warm clothing, blankets, mattresses, pillows, and energy sources for heating and cooking.
Al-Naouq warned that the destruction of vital infrastructure, coupled with overcrowding in temporary shelters, has left Gaza without an adequate sewage system.
Flooding, she said, increases the risk of waterborne diseases, as contaminated water is often used for bathing and washing clothes.
“People in Gaza have been exhausted for two years from unfit living conditions; they are now even more vulnerable to deadly diseases,” she said.
The ICRC stressed that large-scale aid is required, including building materials, medical supplies, heavy machinery to clear rubble, and essential services to help residents rebuild their lives.
Al-Naouq called for continued and long-term humanitarian access to restore basic services and protect the dignity of affected communities.
The ICRC continues to provide support but says far more aid is urgently needed. Over recent weeks, the organization has delivered over 400 cargo pallets of aid, including hygiene kits, household items, shelter materials, forensic supplies, and blankets, along with 100 pallets of
The organization is also supporting primary solid waste collection in Gaza City through temporary income-generating jobs and providing Community kitchens and communal bakeries that serve hundreds of families, and promotes the operation of the ICRC field hospital in Al-Mawasi, Rafah, that enhances Gaza’s devastated health system.
However, Al-Naouq concluded, “much more aid must enter urgently. This is not a quick fix, any response must be based on a realistic assessment of needs and the capacity to meet them without restrictions.”
