DaysofPal- Qatar’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that discussions have started over the second phase of the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement between the Israeli occupation and Hamas, which brought an end to two years of devastating conflict in the Gaza Strip.
Speaking to Fox News, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari described the truce as “a historic day that we have been waiting for for years, especially during the past two years,” referring to the immense humanitarian toll and diplomatic challenges faced throughout the Israeli war.
Al-Ansari stated that Qatari mediators had intentionally slowed down negotiations during the initial stage of the deal to ensure its successful implementation.
“We had delayed a lot of discussions about stage one … to make sure stage one happens,” he explained, adding that the parties are now turning their attention to the more complex next steps.
“The difficult discussions have begun,” al-Ansari continued, “as to how it will look like, to secure Gaza, administer it and ensure that there is no war again.”
Diplomatic sources familiar with the talks said the second phase will likely focus on the political and security arrangements for post-war Gaza, including the establishment of an interim governing body, the return of displaced families, and the coordination of large-scale humanitarian and reconstruction efforts.
Qatar, alongside Egypt and the United States, has been central to mediating the ceasefire deal that enabled a large-scale exchange of captives and prisoners and opened the way for increased humanitarian aid into the enclave.
While the truce has been largely holding, diplomats acknowledge that phase two will pose unprecedented challenges, including questions over who will govern Gaza, how to rebuild its devastated infrastructure, and what security guarantees can prevent renewed hostilities.
Qatar reiterated its commitment to continuing its mediation role, calling on the international community to support efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive, sustainable peace based on justice for the Palestinian people.
