DayofPal– In a bold diplomatic move, Qatar has launched a campaign urging international oversight of Israel’s nuclear facilities, reigniting global debate over nuclear transparency in the Middle East.
According to Epoch Magazine in Israel, senior security officials believe Qatar is spearheading an effort to pressure Israel into allowing inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
At a March 9 meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna, Qatar’s ambassador, Jassim Yaqoub Al-Hammadi, called for comprehensive international supervision of Israel’s nuclear sites. He also demanded that Israel join the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a non-nuclear state.
Israeli sources claim Qatar is working in tandem with Iran to rally global support for nuclear disarmament measures targeting Israel, shifting attention away from Iran’s own controversial nuclear program.
High-level political figures in Israel see this as a strategic maneuver designed to isolate Israel on the global stage.
Al-Hammadi, however, insists that Qatar’s stance is rooted in existing international resolutions, which already call for oversight of Israel’s nuclear capabilities.
He emphasized that Israel remains the only country in the region that has yet to sign the nuclear weapons ban treaty.
Israel has long adhered to a policy of nuclear ambiguity, avoiding direct confirmation or denial of its nuclear arsenal while resisting external oversight. With Qatar’s latest push, the conversation over nuclear transparency in the region is gaining momentum, potentially setting the stage for a new wave of diplomatic tensions.
Last week, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its position, urging the UN nuclear watchdog to extend its supervision to “all of Israel’s nuclear facilities.”
