Amid reports of systematic torture, 2 Palestinian prisoners die in Israeli custody

DaysofPal- The Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office warned on Monday that the Israeli move to advance a death penalty bill for Palestinian prisoners amounts to an official endorsement of extrajudicial killings under a false legal cover.

The statement came after the Knesset’s so-called National Security Committee approved the draft legislation in its first reading, paving the way for its further debate.

According to the office, the proposed law exposes “the criminal mindset” guiding the Israeli political and military establishment and reflects a systematic policy targeting the lives of Palestinian prisoners.

It stressed that the measure constitutes a flagrant violation of international conventions, which prohibit capital punishment and consider it an inhumane penalty.

The group said the legislation poses a direct threat to thousands of detainees, many of whom, it noted, are already subjected to what it described as “slow-motion execution” through torture, starvation, and medical neglect in Israeli prisons.

Holding the Israeli occupation fully responsible for the consequences, the office urged international human rights and humanitarian organizations to act immediately to block the bill’s passage.

It also called on Palestinian society and political factions to unify efforts in confronting what it described as a systematic crime against prisoners.

If enacted, the law would mark the first formal authorization of the death penalty in the Israeli judicial system for Palestinians accused of involvement in attacks, a measure critics say would entrench discriminatory practices and escalate tensions further.
