Palestinians in Ramallah city organized on Monday, May 15, 2023, a popular festival to commemorate 75 years since the “Nakba” catastrophe, which forcibly displaced over 750,000 Palestinians from their homes.
As part of the festival, participants carried signs with the names of cities and villages where their ancestors once lived.
The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics stated that on the 75th anniversary of the Nakba, “the number of Palestinians has multiplied more than 10 times.”
In a statement, the bureau added, “The Nakba constituted a great tragedy for the Palestinian people, and led to the displacement of 957,000 Palestinians from their villages and cities out of 1.4 million Palestinians who were living in historic Palestine in 1948 in 1,300 Palestinian villages and cities.”
The statement continued, “The Israeli occupation controlled 774 Palestinian villages and cities during the Nakba phase, with 531 of them completely destroyed, and the rest subjected to unjust Israeli practices and laws.”
The statement also mentioned that “the total number of Palestinians worldwide reached 14.3 million by the end of 2022.”
