Palestinian Women Prisoners Face Escalating Abuse in Damon Prison

DaysofPal- Israeli occupation continues to subject Palestinian women prisoners held in Damon Prison to escalating abuses, including medical neglect, starvation, repeated raids, and restrictions on basic living conditions, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the office said the prison currently holds around 94 Palestinian women prisoners who are enduring increasingly harsh detention conditions. It accused Israeli prison authorities of denying essential medical care, depriving detainees of adequate food, and carrying out repeated violent crackdowns, while also restricting their ability to practice religious rituals.

The office warned that the violations have intensified in recent months and held Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for the lives and safety of the prisoners, particularly pregnant women, those suffering from serious illnesses, and minors.

It called on international and humanitarian organizations to intervene urgently and pressure Israel to uphold its obligations under international humanitarian law and international human rights conventions.

According to the statement, two pregnant women remain imprisoned following the release of prisoner Amina Al-Tawil two days earlier after four months in detention. The remaining pregnant detainees are Dana Anad Joudeh from Nablus, who was arrested on April 18, 2026 and placed under administrative detention, and Manar Ibrahim Karaja from Ramallah, arrested on April 30, 2026 and still awaiting trial. The office said both women are being deliberately denied adequate medical care, placing their health and the lives of their unborn children at risk.

The statement also highlighted the cases of four women suffering from serious medical conditions. Among them is Fidaa Assaf from Qalqilya, who has been detained since February 2025, is serving a 22-month prison sentence, and is undergoing treatment for cancer. Suhair Za’aqiq from Hebron, held under administrative detention since November 2025, is also battling cancer.

Other critical cases include Abeer Mahmoud Odeh from Tulkarm, who is being held under administrative detention despite suffering from the loss of part of her esophagus and intestines as well as stomach masses, and Fatima Youssef, who is serving a six-month sentence while suffering from hepatitis.

The office further reported severe humanitarian concerns involving two additional prisoners. Ferdous Tanatra from Ramallah, who has a disability, remains in detention, while Salwa Ghawada from Jenin suffers from Alzheimer’s disease to the extent that she reportedly cannot accurately remember her own age.

It also said that two Palestinian minors, Ola Qteishat and Nada Bani Odeh, both from the town of Tammun in Tubas governorate, are being held in a separate room isolated from the rest of the women prisoners.

According to the statement, Israeli prison authorities have adopted a new policy of isolating approximately three women prisoners each week on changing and what it described as arbitrary pretexts, with the aim of increasing psychological pressure on all detainees.

Separately, former prisoner Jana Ihsan Abu Warda recently described worsening conditions inside Damon Prison, saying women detainees are subjected to repeated violent raids. She said the latest raid involved prison forces storming the women’s sections at night using stun grenades and police dogs.

Abu Warda said the raid included assaults on prisoners and forced them to lie face down on the ground while being subjected to degrading treatment. She added that prison authorities have also imposed stricter restrictions by reducing hygiene supplies and preventing the entry of cleaning materials needed to maintain the prison sections.
