DaysofPal- The Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas mourned the death of former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, saying his passing represents a loss of an Arab leader whose name was associated with supporting the Palestinian cause and the Gaza Strip.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Hamas extended its condolences to Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the ruling family, the Qatari government and people, as well as the Arab and Islamic nations.
The movement described Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa as a prominent national and Arab leader and the architect of modern Qatar’s development. It prayed for his mercy and praised his contributions to his country, the region, and humanity.
Hamas said the “Father Emir” was known for his vision and humanitarian and Arab positions, making support for just causes, particularly the Palestinian cause, a consistent policy.
It said Sheikh Hamad defended the rights of the Palestinian people and repeatedly stressed that true peace could only be achieved by ending the occupation and enabling Palestinians to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.
Hamas also highlighted what it described as the late emir’s “historic” position toward Gaza, saying his visit to the besieged Strip to break the blockade marked a significant moment of support and solidarity with Palestinians. The movement said the visit helped reduce Gaza’s isolation and opened new avenues for reconstruction.
The movement noted that Sheikh Hamad repeatedly emphasized that supporting the Palestinian people was an Arab and Islamic responsibility.
It added that the former emir’s name was linked to several humanitarian and development projects in the Palestinian territories, including support for Gaza’s reconstruction and the establishment of Sheikh Hamad City housing project.
Other projects included the Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani Hospital for Rehabilitation and Prosthetics, along with humanitarian and relief assistance that helped ease Palestinian suffering during wars and crises.
Hamas said the “Father Emir” demonstrated his commitment to the Palestinian cause by calling for an emergency Arab summit on the Israeli offensive on Gaza, which was hosted by Doha on January 16, 2009, aiming to unify the Arab position and strengthen political and humanitarian efforts to support Gaza.
The movement reaffirmed that Sheikh Hamad’s positions toward Palestine, particularly Gaza, would remain deeply remembered by Palestinians and Arabs as a symbol of his support for the Palestinian cause.
Qatar’s Amiri Diwan announced earlier on Sunday that Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani died on July 12, 2026, at the age of 74.
