Palestinian People, Factions Express Anger at Sharm El-Sheikh ‘Security Meeting’

Mourners carry the body Palestinian Abdelfattah Kharwasheh, 49, who according to Israel, killed two Israeli settlers in a shooting attack, after he was killed by Israeli forces in a raid, during his funeral in Askar refugee camp in Nablus in the West Bank March 8, 2023.

Several Palestinian factions condemned the Sharm El-Sheikh security meeting with Israel, scheduled to start today, March 19, 2023.

The five-party meeting will host delegates from Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, the United States, and ‘Israel’. It aims at ending ‘tension’ between the Israeli occupation and the Palestinian people.

For Palestinians, such meetings aim at whitewashing Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people, which has increased since the start of 2023.

The Sharm El-Sheikh meeting came following waves of Israeli violence and unjust measures taken by the Israeli far-right-wing government.

So far in 2023, Israeli occupation forces and settlers killed about 88 Palestinians, including at least 17 children and a woman. Israel killed 35 Palestinians only in occupied Jenin.

The Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas said that the Sharm El-Sheikh meeting came to quell the resistance of the Palestinian people in light of the continuation of Israeli crimes.

In addition, Omar Assaf, a member of preparatory committee of the Palestinian Popular Conference, expressed anger over the Palestinian Authority’s participation at Sharm El-Sheikh meeting.

“On a daily basis, we survive the consequences of the Aqaba Conference in terms of the escalation of the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people and prisoners,” Assaf explained.

In late February, the US, Egypt, and Jordan held a meeting at Aqaba to discuss the de-escalating tension in the Palestinian lands. Participants agreed at the end of the meeting to convene again in Egypt’s Red Sea city of Sharm El-Sheikh in March.

Since the Aqaba meeting was held, Israeli occupation forces and settlers killed 24 Palestinians during military raids in the occupied West Bank.

In 2023, the Palestinian scene has seen a steep rise in Israeli violence as Israeli occupation forces escalated aggression against the Palestinian sanctions, people, prisoners, and lands.
