DaysofPal- The Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Authority issued a warning regarding the Israeli Prison Service’s (IPS) increasing hostility and retaliation towards Palestinian female inmates at Damon Prison.
According to the Authority, the prison guards treat female inmates in an unethical and cruel manner, attempting to cause them physical and psychological harm in any way.
“It explained that recent visits by the Authority’s legal team to Damon Prison documented the severity of the crimes committed by the prison administration, with a particular focus on the psychological torture of female prisoners. This included constant threats of rape, strip searches, verbal abuse, insults, beatings, and starvation.”
The prison administration also continues to deprive female prisoners of blankets, clothing, cleaning materials, disinfectants, and feminine hygiene products. It disregards their health and medical needs, and exhibits extreme inconsistency in providing medicines and treatment.
The Commission noted that collective punishment is regularly imposed on female prisoners, including being deprived of the ability to shower, having their rooms locked, and being prevented from going to the recreation yard.
It further explained that any inquiry or discussion from a female prisoner with the prison administration police could result in a raid, abuse, torture, and humiliation for the entire prison.
In its statement, the Commission called on women’s institutions, associations, and local, regional, and international unions to collaborate in exposing the ongoing violations against Palestinian female prisoners.
It urged coordinated and integrated efforts to build a powerful public opinion that could have a tangible impact in ending their isolation and breaking the occupation’s policies of vengeance against Palestinian women.
“The Israeli occupation authorities are currently detaining 89 female prisoners in Al-Damon Prison. However, this figure does not include all female prisoners from Gaza, who are being held in camps affiliated with the occupation army.
The exact number of these prisoners remains unknown due to the ongoing crime of enforced disappearance affecting large numbers of detainees from Gaza, as previously stated by the Palestinian Prisoners Society.
