The Ministry of Interior and National Security in Gaza confirmed that there were no political detainees in the Gaza Strip.

The ministry said, in a press statement, on Monday that all of its prisoners are arrested or sentenced in connection with criminal or security cases related to harming the Palestinian Resistance, all of which are being examined before the Palestinian judiciary.

It indicated that, in compliance with what was agreed upon in the Cairo dialogues (February 2021), and as a contribution to enhancing the atmosphere of public freedoms, a number of these issues are being legally dealt with in the implementation of the Palestinian national consensus.

It also affirmed that public freedoms in the Gaza Strip are safeguarded, and practically practiced by all Palestinian work components according to the Palestinian Basic Law.

The Ministry continued that what is required is the honest implementation of what was stated in the presidential decree on the issue of freedoms, and the spread of atmospheres and climates in the West Bank and Gaza alike. For the sake of the success of the democratic process expected on May 22nd.

It is noteworthy that the statement of the Ministry of Interior in Gaza came hours after Muhammad Shtayyeh, head of the Ramallah government, demanded the "Hamas" movement to release 80 political prisoners in its prisons.

On Saturday, the President of the Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, issued a decree on the promotion of public freedoms in the Palestinian territories as part of the consensuses that took place between the factions in Cairo at the end of their dialogues on February 8 and 9, in preparation for the elections.

Palestinian elections are scheduled to take place in three stages during the current year in which legislative on May 22, presidential on July 31, and National Council elections (outside Palestine) on August 31.
