“Rafah and Khan Younis cities in the south of the Gaza Strip are now completely without electricity,” an official in the Gaza electricity company said.
Two other Egyptian lines feeding these two cities at a capacity of 20-24 megawatts, had been completely disconnected, the official said.
Egypt claims that the three power lines were connected due to damages and all of them are undergoing maintenance works.
However, monitors said that cutting electricity lines supplying Gaza is part of Egypt’s role in the Israeli and internationally backed siege imposed on Gaza ten years ago. Credible Egyptian sources, preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed this.
Gaza households have electricity on only six hours a day due to the Israeli cut of power lines feeding middle and northern Gaza cities, in addition to the shortage of fuel supplies for the sole electricity plant in the coastal enclave.
Regarding the power lines, Israeli uses the same pretext that Egypt uses regarding the cuts. However, the fuel shortage is caused by high taxes collected by Palestinian Authority when the electricity company in Gaza buy the fuel from Israel.
