Days of Palestine, Jerusalem -Marking Palestinian Prisoners’ Day, Military Court Watch (MCW) issued its monthly report, stating that 7,896 Palestinians are currently held by Israeli occupation.
MCW reported Israeli Prison Service (IPS)’s statistics showing that there were 6,204 Palestinians from the occupied West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip held as “security prisoners” in Israeli detention facilities by the end of last month.
It said that this number included 438 children.
Regarding children, the MCW said that there was an 8 per cent increase in the number compared with the previous month and an annual increase of 94 per cent compared with 2015.
These figures include seven children held under administrative detention. A further 1,692 Palestinians were held as “criminal prisoners” including 15 children.
About crimes attached by the Israeli occupation to Palestinians, the Palestinian Prisoner Club (PPC) said: “This is related to litigating Israelis in Israeli court.”
For example, the PPC said, a Palestinian worker files a complaint against his Israeli employer after denying his financial rights.
The MCW said that the Israeli Prison Service does not give exact number of Palestinian children held annually in Israeli military jails, but it estimated that between 500 and 700 children.
It also said that the Israeli Prison Service does not include children, who are arrested, interrogated, tortured and spent less than five days in Israeli custody.
