Days of Palestine, West Bank –Fifteen Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails are suffering cancer and are at risk of death, the Association of Palestinian Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners (Hussam) has said.
In a statement, the organisation said that they believed the real number is higher. These 15 prisoners were diagnosed and found suffering cancer, but many others have tumours and Israeli prison services prevents them from proper tests.

The organisation blamed Israeli occupation for causing cancer as prisoners face high levels of radiation inside prison cells.

According to the organisation, the Israeli occupation sets up devices to jam satellite and telephone signals near and above the prisoners’ cells. In addition, the high level of radiation is caused by the use of security scanners that prisoners undergo during frequent searches.
Hussam also said that a number of prisons are located near the Dimona nuclear reactor as well as toxic waste dumps in the Negev Desert, another factor which it said contributed to the high incidence of cancer.
Keeping prisoners with risk of life inside prisons is a “flagrant violation” of international law related to prisoners, Hussam said. It reiterated, what makes the situation more difficult for the prisoners is that they do not receive proper medical help inside the Israeli jails.
The organisation said that around 1,500 Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails are suffering various kinds of diseases. Therefore, it called for the international community to take action to help the release of these prisoners.
