Days of Palestine, Gaza Strip –Israeli gunboats opened fire on Monday at Palestinian fishermen off northern coasts of the Gaza Strip.
Fishermen said that the Israeli gunboats opened fire at their colleagues when they were “coming back to Al-Sudaniyya neighbourhood.”
Other fishermen, who did not finish their fishing at the time of the incident, immediately and quickly left the sea, fearing arrest or having their fishing boats confiscated.
This is the second incident since Saturday, the fishermen said. “The Israeli gunboats opened fire at us in the early morning, but none of us was injured” a fisherman told Days of Palestine.
There are around 4,000 Palestinian fishermen in the coastal enclave, 90 percent of whom are poor according to a 2011 report by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
On August 26, a ceasefire agreement between the Palestinian resistance groups and the Israeli occupation stipulated that the Israeli occupation would immediately expand the fishing zone off Gaza coast.
According to the agreement, fishermen were told to be allowed to sail as far as six nautical miles from shore, and would continue to expand the area up to 12 nautical miles gradually.
Since then, there have been widespread reports that the Israeli forces have at times opened fire at fishermen within those new limits, and the zone has not been expanded.
